Taking Over the Denver Art Museum: Colorado LGBTQ+ Bar Association & Bradley University

What a weekend in Denver! There is something special about working in a space where "art" is built into the very walls. This past week, I had the pleasure of "taking over" the event spaces at the Denver Art Museum, and the energy was absolutely electric.

I was there to document two distinct, wonderful groups: the Colorado LGBTQ+ Bar Association and the alumni from Bradley University.

The Law, The Legacy, and the Lens

The Colorado LGBTQ+ Bar Association event was a masterclass in community and professional excellence. Capturing the connections made between some of the sharpest legal minds in the state was a highlight. Shortly after, the room transformed for Bradley University, bringing a sense of school spirit and nostalgia into the sleek, modern architecture of the museum.

Between the formal handshakes and the candid laughs, I couldn't help but marvel at the setting. The DMA isn't just a building; it's a playground for a photographer. The way the light hits the geometric lines of the Hamilton Building—well, let’s just say my Fujifilm GFX was very happy.

A Quick Peek at the Gallery

When you’re hired to shoot in a museum, you don't just stay in the ballroom. We had the incredible opportunity to wander through the galleries and take in some of the current exhibitions. There is nothing quite like being surrounded by world-class art to get your own creative juices flowing for the next set of portraits.

To the hosts and the guests: Thank you. You were lovely people, the art was breathtaking, and the building remains one of my favorite places to work in the country.

Denver Art Museum, you were a dream. See you again soon!

Jay Cupcake

I’ve always believed that a great portrait is a collaboration, not just a click of a shutter. My name is Jay, and for over a decade, I’ve been capturing the vibrant, the surreal, and the unapologetically authentic. Recently relocated from the mountains of Colorado to the Twin Cities, I bring an editorial eye and a 'laughter-first' philosophy to every session.

My work spans the spectrum of the human experience—from photographing the Mayor of Denver for Civilian Magazine to creating high-concept digital collages featuring the icons of the drag and variety scene. Whether I’m building a complex 100-layer digital piece or capturing a clean, professional headshot, my goal is to make my subjects feel like the most powerful version of themselves. I don't just take pictures; I help personalities shine through.
