Meet Jay Cupcake: My Featured Interview with Canvas Rebel

I am so excited to share that I was recently interviewed by Canvas Rebel for their "Stories & Insights" series! This was a wonderful opportunity to step out from behind the camera and share some of the personal stories and lessons I’ve learned throughout my career as a photographer and digital collage artist.

Diving Deep into the Creative Process

In the profile, we dive into the nitty-gritty of how I developed my craft. We talked about:

  • The Learning Curve: How I learned to do what I do and the skills I find most essential to my work.

  • Hindsight: What I wish I had known when I was first starting out and what might have sped up my learning process.

  • The Journey: Insights into the resilience and persistence required to build a creative business in today's landscape.

Why These Conversations Matter

Sharing these "behind-the-scenes" insights is important to me because the path of an artist is rarely a straight line. I hope that by sharing my own hurdles and breakthroughs, I can provide a little inspiration (or at least a "you're not alone" moment) for other creatives currently navigating their own paths.

Jay Cupcake

I’ve always believed that a great portrait is a collaboration, not just a click of a shutter. My name is Jay, and for over a decade, I’ve been capturing the vibrant, the surreal, and the unapologetically authentic. Recently relocated from the mountains of Colorado to the Twin Cities, I bring an editorial eye and a 'laughter-first' philosophy to every session.

My work spans the spectrum of the human experience—from photographing the Mayor of Denver for Civilian Magazine to creating high-concept digital collages featuring the icons of the drag and variety scene. Whether I’m building a complex 100-layer digital piece or capturing a clean, professional headshot, my goal is to make my subjects feel like the most powerful version of themselves. I don't just take pictures; I help personalities shine through.
